How Does A Beard Transplant Work?
Many men find that they do not experience full thick beard growth, and whilst this is normal in your late teens and early 20’s not to have your full beard, by your mid late 20’s and early 30’s you’ve likely got as much growth as will develop naturally and there isn’t much that can be done to develop it non-surgically. There is some anecdotal evidence that derma-rollering or using minoxidil can help a little, it usually doesn’t bring on significant change, so to thicken it up fully to the desired shape and style a beard transplant may be the way to go.
So how does a Beard Transplant work? it uses hairs from the back of your head in the donor area (which is located approximately between your ears) and implants those hairs into your face. This will result in a slightly thinner donor area as like all transplants these hairs do not grow back in the old location once removed, but will give much improved beard that can be shaped in a design of your choice in consultation with your surgeon. It is worth remembering that the new beard hair we transplant will grow the same type, colour, thickness and texture as the hair on the back of your head, so if your current head hair and beard hair don’t match then it may not be suitable for you.
Most patients focus on the area above the chin line to give a natural looking thick beard in an attractive shape. A beard transplant usually takes around 5-7 hours to complete depending on graft numbers and will be done in 1 day under local anaesthetic, with around 7-10 days recovery time needed afterwards.
You will see the results of the beard transplant immediately although these initial hairs will likely shed, with the first of the new hair growth starting after the 3 month mark, and final results after 9-12 months. You can usually trim the beard area after 2-3 weeks.
